Getting Better
The more I read, the more I understand about the world - the more I understand about myself…the better my writing becomes.
I’ve read 3 books this week so far - and I’m hoping to finish another one this evening. I’m on a marathon reading binge. I’ve made a list of books to read that some say would be impossible to get through in a lifetime. I am getting through it. One word, one sentence, one paragraph, one book at a time.
I’m reading across genres and across mediums. I’m reading everything I can get my hands on. I’m taking notes. I’m highlighting. I’m becoming absorbed in story.
Joseph Campbell once went to live in a cabin in the woods for 5 years and did nothing but read. When he emerged he was a different person. Not every one has such a luxury in life. But I do, and I intend to take advantage of it.
When I first returned here to the Manor I was enveloped in a cloud of shame and guilt. I’d been given this remarkable opportunity to study life. This gift of time. And I was squandering it. I was wasting my days on the trivial and the unimportant.
Now my days are filled with words. Words written. Words read. There are words and nothing more. And in this moment - nothing else fits.
